    Frequently Asked Questions

    What is a Surf Retreat?

A surf retreat is much more than a surf lesson. At Saint Girons Surf House, it is a complete surfing experience combining accommodation, daily coaching, surf theory, video analysis, ocean awareness and life in a beach house just steps from the waves.

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced surfer, our surf retreat is designed to help you improve faster while enjoying the relaxed lifestyle of the French Atlantic coast.

When is the Best Time to Surf in Saint Girons?

Saint Girons offers surfable waves all year round, but each season has its own character.

For beginners, summer provides warmer water, smaller waves and consistent conditions. For intermediate and advanced surfers, September and October are often considered the best months, with warm water, fewer crowds, offshore winds and long-period swells.

This is why we organise our Surf Retreats in September, when conditions are often at their best and the beach becomes much quieter after the peak summer season.

What Is Included in the Surf Retreat?

Our Surf Retreat includes accommodation, daily surf coaching, surf theory sessions, video and photo analysis, breakfast, use of surf equipment and access to all common areas of the Surf House.

More than just surf lessons, it’s a complete surfing immersion designed to help you progress faster while enjoying the surf lifestyle.

Why Do We Organise the Surf Retreat in September?

September is considered one of the best months of the year for surfing in Southwest France. The ocean is still warm from summer, the crowds are gone, the weather remains pleasant and autumn swells begin to arrive. It is the perfect combination of quality waves, comfortable temperatures and a relaxed atmosphere.

Can I Use the Surf Equipment Outside Lesson Times?

Yes. Guests staying at the Surf House can continue to use the surf equipment outside lesson times, allowing you to practise, free surf and spend as much time in the ocean as possible during your stay.

    What is a Surf Camp?

We usually say surf camp for a surf immersion vacation, where is all about the surf and acknowledge about the subject. Accommodation, surf lesson, surf theory, surf music, surf movies, surf skate in a surf community.

Can I Book Surf Lessons Without Staying at the Surf House?

Yes. Our Surf School is open to everyone and offers group and private lessons from May to October, subject to availability.

You do not need to stay at Saint Girons Surf House to join a lesson. Whether you are visiting for a day, a weekend or a family holiday, we can help you find the right lesson for your level.

Why Choose Saint Girons for a Surf Holiday?

Saint Girons Plage is one of the hidden gems of the French Atlantic coast. Unlike busier surf destinations, you’ll find uncrowded beaches, endless sandbanks, beautiful pine forests and a relaxed atmosphere. Whether you’re learning to surf or looking to improve your skills, Saint Girons offers consistent waves for all levels and plenty of space in the water.

Is Saint Girons Good for Beginner Surfers?

Absolutely. The beach breaks around Saint Girons offer a variety of waves suitable for beginners, intermediates and advanced surfers. Our instructors carefully select the best spot according to your level, the tide and the ocean conditions to ensure a safe and enjoyable learning experience.

Can I Come Alone to the Surf Retreat?

Yes, and many of our guests do. Solo travellers are a big part of the Surf House experience. The shared breakfasts, surf sessions and beach house atmosphere make it easy to meet like-minded people from around the world. Many guests arrive alone and leave with new friends.

    What Should I Bring?

Bring your swimwear, beach towel, sunscreen, reusable water bottle, flip-flops and comfortable clothes. If you already own surf equipment, feel free to bring it, although all necessary surf gear is available at the Surf House.

Are Vegan or Special Diet Options Available?

Yes. We do our best to accommodate dietary preferences and restrictions. Our breakfasts focus on fresh, local and organic products whenever possible, and vegan options can be provided upon request.

Is There Localism in Saint Girons?

Saint Girons is known for its friendly and relaxed atmosphere. As everywhere in the surfing world, respecting surf etiquette and other surfers in the water goes a long way. Be respectful, keep the beach clean and you’ll feel welcome both in and out of the water.

    What is the water temperature?

Winter 10 to 13 degrees (4:3 wetsuits plus hoodie and shoes), Spring 11 to 17 degrees (4:3 wetsuits) , Autumn 14 to 18 degrees (a good 3:2 will do it), Summer 19 till 22 degrees (shorty or 2mm is fine).

    What is a Kook?

You are already a kook if you don’t know. Kook is a poser, a wannabe surfer, a novice, a person who does novice mistakes like putting the fins in a wrong way or wears shorts over the wetsuit.

When is the Best time to surf in St Girons?

Never!(just kidding ) Actually depends on your level and what you’re looking for.. Winter is cold, big and windy, so December, January and February is the worst months. March, April and May is very random, water still cold(around 15 degrees) wind is shifty and so is the swell.. If you lucky you can have a nice easter week with good conditions but the probability is 50%.. June, July and August is the busiest time but nice hot weather, small waves, windy afternoons but pretty surfable most of the time. Crowded with all the gusts from the campings around. September, October and November is the prime time for surfing. Long period swell, offshore wind and not cold yet. that’s the locals season, beware of locals and don’t bring your friends on a local lineup.
